Flame retardants are materials designed to prevent or delay the spread of fire and smoke in buildings during a fire. Flame retardants are used in a wide range of products, including building materials and cladding, furniture, textiles and plastics, and help reduce the damage caused by fires.
The goal:
Their primary purpose is to protect human life and property by reducing the rate of fire spread and the amount of smoke emitted during a fire. Delaying the fire will buy more time for evacuation and extinguishing.
Method:
Flame retardants work in several different ways to achieve flame retardancy:
The first method
Similarly, a flame retardant will be mixed into the product itself, plastic or resin, when designing the product, so that when exposed to a flame, the product itself will be significantly less flammable.
The second method
The third method
Mandatory standards:
In Israel, 2 standards are defined in the field of flame retardants:
Tests the properties of the entire coating system, including its flame retardants, and defines the classification of fire spread, smoke emission, and deformation of the entire product being tested.
