Fire barriers are an essential component that is required to be implemented, according to Israeli standards, as an integral part of passive fire protection systems. These barriers are installed at all points where there are openings or longitudinal seams in fire walls and ceilings.
The goal:
Fire barriers are designed to prevent the passage of fire, toxic gases, and smoke through openings in walls and ceilings where electromechanical systems penetrate or are structural seams. Their purpose is to allow the building's population to escape safely, protect human lives, allow fire and rescue forces to enter the building safely to rescue victims, and at the same time protect the intellectual property and property existing in the building.
Method:
The fire barriers will be designed and installed in fire-resistant walls and ceilings and will completely seal them. The fire resistance time of the barrier is the same as the fire resistance time of the wall or ceiling in which they are installed. The barriers are made of non-combustible materials such as: mineral wool, ablative (heat-absorbing) or intumescent (heat-inflating) mastics, metal collars or sleeves and strips. All solutions are always tested in an oven as part of a complete system, to prove their functional ability, before being installed in the structure.
Mandatory standards:
The installation of all fire barriers in a particular structure will be planned in advance, submitted for approval, approved, installed, and inspected by a certified inspector. Everything will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines of Israeli Standard 2174.
This standard includes the design management for three possible types of fire barriers in a structure. Below is a quote from the guidelines of the standard itself, as follows:
All fire barrier materials in joints (joint seals) and their installation method in walls and ceilings will meet the requirements of the European standard EN 1366-4.
or American standard UL 2079

All fire barrier materials in horizontal gaps in curtain walls and their installation method shall meet the requirements of the American standard ASTM E2307.
or the requirements of European standards EN 1364-4 and EN 1364-3.

All fire barrier materials in system passages (such as: electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, communications) and their installation method will meet the requirements of one of these standards:
In ceilings and walls – according to American standard UL 1479-94
or the American standard ASTM E814
or British Standard BS 476-20
or the European standard EN 1366-3.
In the walls – in addition to the devices mentioned above, you can also choose the Israeli standard TI 931 Part 2
